PDU (Power Distribution Unit)

A PDU (Power Distribution Unit) is a device used in data centers to deliver power from the main electrical system to servers, switches, storage units, and other IT equipment. It sits inside a server rack and distributes electricity in a safe and organized way. As a result, PDUs help maintain stable and reliable power for all devices.

PDUs come in many types, including basic, metered, monitored, and smart units. Basic PDUs simply distribute power. Meanwhile, smart PDUs track voltage, current, temperature, and sometimes even allow remote control of each outlet. Therefore, PDUs play a key role in managing energy use and preventing overloads.


Key Characteristics

1. Rack-Mounted Design

Most PDUs are mounted vertically or horizontally inside server racks. This keeps power close to the equipment it serves. In addition, rack-mounted PDUs help reduce cable clutter and improve airflow.

2. Multiple Outlet Types

PDUs support different plug types, such as C13, C19, NEMA, and others. As a result, they can power a wide range of servers and networking devices. This flexibility also helps when upgrading equipment.

3. Monitoring & Metering

Smart PDUs include sensors that monitor power draw, load balance, and temperature. In addition, many smart units allow remote access. Therefore, technicians can troubleshoot issues without being on-site.

4. Redundancy Options

Some racks use A/B power feeds, meaning two PDUs supply power to the same device. Consequently, equipment stays online even if one feed fails. This is common in high-availability environments.

5. Safety Features

PDUs often include breakers or fuses to prevent overloads. Furthermore, they help isolate faults and protect both equipment and personnel.
